How to clean animal urine from my loudspeaker finish and connectors.

Urine may permanently stain or damage the loudspeaker’s finish. Also, the chemical compounds in urine can corrode the connectors. If your speakers get marked, clean them as soon as you notice.

How to clean urine from the finish of your loudspeaker.

  1. Wet a small section of a clean cotton cloth or new microfiber cloth with your favorite pet urine remover. The area of the cloth should be wet, but not dripping. If your cloth is not new, especially if microfiber, you should assume it has collected something that is going to scratch your finish.

  2. Dab the urine marked area of the speaker with the wetted cloth. The speaker finish should look wetted but not dripping.

  3. Let sit for a few minutes.

  4. With a clean cloth, dab-dry your speaker—don’t wipe. Wiping, apposed to dapping, on gloss finish can cause swirl marks. Wiping on grain can leave behind threads or fibers from the cloth. Wiping of matte finishes may cause subtle optical irregularities.

  5. Repeat until the urine mark is gone.

How to clean urine from loudspeaker connectors.

You need the following supplies:

  • Your favorite urine remover

  • Two ounces or more of distilled water in a spritz bottle

  • Aerosol can of quick dry electronics connector cleaner
    (example: CRC® QD Electronics Cleaner)

  • Several clean cloths, rags or paper towels

  • Can of compressed air

  1. Remove the speaker cables from the loudspeaker.
You should clean the speaker cable and its connectors too. Likely, this method works for whatever speaker cable brand you have but you should confirm with the maker. Some designs are susceptible to water ingress, which is likely to cause issues as the cable ages.

  2. Remove the nuts from the speaker’s binding posts.

  3. Directly, but lightly, spray your favorite urine remover onto the connections including the removed nuts.
The binding posts and the ZuB3 connection (if applicable) are sealed and can tolerate direct application of the urine remover.
Note - some care should be taken to not have too much overspray onto the loudspeaker cabinet. If the urine remover floods the insert area under the screw heads, the cabinet’s wood core may absorb the urine remover and swell.

  4. Let stand for a minute or two, but not longer than three.

  5. After the urine remover has sat for a few minutes, dab and wipe dry with a clean dry cloth.
Repeat this step if any urine remains visible.

  6. Now directly spritz the connectors with distilled water, including the inside of the ZuB3 connector—again avoiding too much overspray onto the loudspeaker cabinet.

  7. Without waiting, using the can of compressed air, blow the connections out to displace the distilled water and mostly dry the connectors. This should not take more than thirty seconds.

  8. After a quick air-can drying of the connections, immediately spray the area with quick dry electronics cleaner. This will displace any remaining water and give the contacts a final cleaning. And once again, avoid too much overspray on the cabinet. If you do get overspray of the electronics cleaner on the cabinet, just dap it off, don’t wipe.

  9. Let the connector sit for a minute or two to allow the quick dry electronics cleaner to evaporate.

  10. Lastly, using the can of compressed air, blow the connections out one last time, just to be sure all is dry.

  11. Reconnect and play.
